Forecast Says?

It’s always hard for me to figure out what to wear for each season. But this time of year, New England weather seems to change every 15 minutes (sometimes to extremes) and often wardrobe changes are required. So I’m either unprepared and soaked because I didn’t interpret that 10% chance of rain as a thunderous downpour… or I’m this person:

But what would be really useful is a weather app that simply gave me the forecast in clothing.

I consult NOAA text forecast for Boston, Weather Underground radar and sometimes local weather temp app.

I bike with easily removable Timbuk2 panniers (shoulder strap makes them an instant manbag) and often carry in them transitional clothing – rain jacket and perhaps rainpants, or for cold weather gloves, hat and a sweatshirt layer. Small black plastic bags (white bags are okay between Memorial Day and Labor Day) make feet waterproof.

There’s no reason to be unprepared, if you are willing to pack a little extra clothing. The Boy Scout motto comes to mind: Be Prepared.

Ha! Yep. That’s me. Hauling half the closet with me just to go to work. And that does include the swimsuit. 😉

This is why I love having a front basket on my bike. I can take things off and put them back on without having to stop the bike and dig stuff out of my panniers.

So it won’t help if the weather’s wrong, but for the uncertain, there’s now an app that does give you the weather in clothes form! http://www.whattowearcycling.com/

For temperature related decisions, I find that I don’t have to worry much. The bike is the perfect temperature regulator: if you get surprised by a heat wave, slow down; if the cold chills your bones, ride faster!
As for the rain, sadly, it’s not so easy to cope with.
    Love your drawings!
