Fear of Sweat

It’s been hot and humid in Boston. So there have been a few uncomfortable bike rides into work recently.

Fear of Sweat

Okay, so riding a bike in summer is a bit sweaty. But it seems a lot of people really worry way too much about sweating.

Fear of Sweat

I admit I have a job where a few beads of sweat or wrinkles in my clothes don’t matter so perhaps I have it easy. But still seems some people have no sense of scale. As if a single bead of sweat warrants immediate separation from decent society for a vigorous scrub and wardrobe change.

Fear of Sweat

So I’ll stick to my routine of one shower in the morning and a casual bike ride to work. But I do keep emergency moist towelettes in my bag. Because July.

It’s 43% humidity over here (unusually high for the high desert) and, yes, I sweat during part of my 10-mile ride to work. Most of it evaporates. Wearing a dress helps (sorry guys) and I keep my hair in a bun under the shade of my helmet cover. It makes dabbing at perspiration easier and a few minutes after I arrive at work, people would not have guessed that I rode in if they didn’t see a bike sitting next to me.

I ride in traffic about 7 hilly miles each day around noon to meet up with my cohorts, and I am a sweat hog on arrival. So I arrive 10 minutes early, lock myself in the restroom, paper towel down, meditate, and feel great, l love the salt all over my body for the rest of the day. I of course get a second salt bath going home…no one in the group complains…are they just being generous?
