It’s spring, and there are many more bikes on the road. Others want to start biking. But changing to any new mode of transportation is a big lifestyle change and takes time. Just like learning to drive:

When I finally started biking, it was intimidating because I didn’t know “how” to do it…. just like all the other things I found intimidating.

But biking was one of those things I had to learn by doing.

Over time I learned how to adapt my lifestyle.

So if you are considering biking, you can’t change overnight. Break it down into small steps.

Perhaps one day you’ll wonder how you ever got around without a bicycle.

As someone who thinks of their bike as a car, sometimes I really wish bikes were a little more like cars. Because most drivers I know would not put up with this sort of thing…

Need for Speed

Yeah, everybody knows traffic is bad. But sometimes it’s outright embarrassing.

Especially if you spent $60-90K on your car with the promise of speed, agility, and driver engagement. And have this taunting you the whole traffic jam.

Now that biking is really picking up in my town, I’m noticing something interesting. I don’t need to check Yelp much anymore.

A Nose Knows

Riding bikes is fun, but sometimes it’s hard to get down the street. Especially in a neighborhood with so many restaurants.

It’s so easy to be tempted to stop and eat everything. I’m personally keeping several restaurants in business that are on my route. But there’s danger in letting your stomach do the navigating. For example if some people figured out our weakness they may try to take advantage.

Then there’s plain old bait and switch.

And we haven’t even started barbecue season! If you’re cooking something good, don’t be surprised if I hop your fence. I should eat before I leave the house.

Women Mean Business

This week was the National Women’s Bicycling Forum held by the League of American Bicyclists. While I wasn’t able to make it to Washington, DC, I tried to follow as much as I could online. The theme was “Woman Mean Business” and there’s a pretty serious video presentation of just how much business.

But it doesn’t take statistics to tell us women there is some serious untapped market potential out there.

But beyond simple market potential, we’re a force to be reckoned with. And I reckon there’s going to be some change coming.

Cold Weather Disguises

The other day I was biking home and a cyclist waved at me.

Now, biking in Boston sometimes has the feeling of a biking in a small town. I’m always running into friends on the street. But in cold weather there are some social challenges.

And I may not even recognize my best friends unless they are willing to unbundle a bit. Not always pleasant this time of year.

So it got me wondering if there’s a better way.

Maybe not. I may not recognize my friends until spring, my apologies.

Snow City

This past week the city got a lot of snow all at once. Over night the city transformed to something surreal and monstrous. It was hard to get around since nothing was plowed for bikes or shoveled well for pedestrians. But I think I figured it out- magic!

I wonder why I’ve never tried this before? Oh, right, magic isn’t real. But gravity is.

Now can we clear out the bike traffic lanes?

Valentine Bikes Day
