Beginning
The weather’s better, you’re burned out on traffic, and you hate the gym. You hear it’s “Bike Month” and an idea forms in your head. Could you bike to work? Maybe it’s not that crazy. It might solve some problems. But not before presenting some challenges. So you decide to get some information.
You seek out people who can give you advice.
But they may not have all the answers.
While there’s plenty of knowledge and resources available, no one will be able to give you the exact advice that’s right for you. In the beginning I looked for someone to teach me. I imagined someone who would tell me exactly what I wanted to know, someone like this:
Which was pretty specific to me.
Ultimately everybody’s biking needs are unique. So do research and get advice, but eventually you will learn more by doing. It’s actually not that scary but it takes time.
Aerosoles boots – Lasticity are the best superhero business boot for biking around LA or most major cities. You can do 14 hours at a festival in them and still look hot, or put a pair of pants on top and go all Clark Kent on them. Other heels will get stuck in most pedals or gnarled on a chain.
Nice art bikeyface. We do custom LEDs for bikers and sell kits so you can add some light to whatever riding outfit you choose. I’m designing new coats and jackets programmed for easy visibility for those of us who commute around LA yearround and want to stay out past 8PM while looking sexy enough for red carpet moments.
Find me @amoration and @toyshoppe if you want LED love.
So awesome. 🙂
Ha! the first image is SO perfect. 🙂
I really think the cupcake tote for bikes should be invented. I mean, they already have 6 pack totes and stuff…
Happy Bike Month!
Tomboy business casual…is cool these days. 🙂 I remember being slightly horrified when I left a large sporting goods store that is part of a national chain where they also sold bike clothing, accessories and bikes. One store clerk was urging the other store clerk who was interested in cycling that she MUST: have a pair of lycra tights, shorts, rain jacket, helmet, and 6 other things. Totally intimidating and costly that would put anyone off.
I would have advised the person just to get a bike helmet, bell and bike light..if they had a bike already. Then later, they can buy other stuff over time.
My bike commuting savior has been clothes specifically designed for hiking and/or travel. Companies like Ex Officio and Royal Robbins make really cute women’s clothes (including skirts and dresses) that wick sweat and have other technical features that make them comfortable for riding to work. People at my office are always impressed when I ride in wearing a skirt (especially when I show them I have spandex short-shorts underneath so I don’t have to worry about giving everyone on the street a free show if the breeze flips my skirt up while I’m riding).
