Uniform
The other day I was riding to work when I happened to notice the other people riding bicycles around me.
This was more of a coincidence than typical of what I see everyday. But I wondered- does not wearing a fluorescent uniform make a person stand out more?
As a person interested in the safety of bikers, I believe that wearing a high-viz yellow jacket and gloves is as important as wearing a helmet. Even if the cyclist is struck, I would hope that a prudent member of the jury would agree that they were doing all the could to be visible and that the other party is at fault.
I don’t judge people’s outfits. If people feel more comfortable or [insert reason here] wearing hi viz clothing, then good on them. Glad to see them out biking!
thanks!
I bought a hi-viz jacket last fall and immediately noticed a difference in how people driving cars maneuvered around me–they seem more likely to give me more space for a longer amount of time than when I was riding with a dark purple jacket. I don’t love the look, but I feel a lot safer.
What’s neat about this drawing is that three of the four men actually have decent cycling form, so they are likely experienced cyclists.
I think the hi-vis stuff looks silly and I’m not at all convinced it’s effective. I have good lights and I use them, I am not willing to wear the same colour shirt or jacket every day.
