Sometimes when I hear about great bike infrastructure in other cities I’m tempted to move hundreds or thousands of miles away. Truthfully, in Boston, sometimes it doesn’t mean moving hundreds of miles. Sometimes it’s matter of going 2 blocks. That’s because metro Boston is really a bunch of towns/cities very close together. Each one has different levels of bike-ability. Because of this, […]
When I bicycle around Boston it’s mostly vehicularly. While the rules of the road generally give some order to the roads- I always need be extra vigilant and assume drivers don’t see me. I’m experienced, follow the rules of the road, and best practices for bicycling. I can do everything in my power- but there’s no barrier […]
By now I’m sorta tired of reading about how great bike infrastructure is in a place like the Netherlands. But slowly the U.S. is getting a little better at building those ordinary bike paths. Reading about new things happening in each city gets me wondering if the bike lanes are greener on the other side. And as I […]
I have to bicycle vehicularly most of the time because there’s not much infrastructure yet. But I’d prefer not to. What I can’t understand why anyone would argue against protected bike lanes. I wonder how the argument would go if applied to other things- like a zoo?
Pothole season is in full swing here. Drivers are concerned about potholes because of potential damage to their cars. But I see potholes differently. Gravel or road debris may not even register with drivers except for the outside chance of a cracked windshield. But all I see is: Sometimes I report issues to the city. And […]
Recently I found myself in this situation: And I wished I could show this dude what would happen if I really did own the road. Things would be very different. I wouldn’t have to take the lane ever again. People would have their roads back, and they’d be safer because… Bad behavior wouldn’t be tolerated. And parking […]
Bike are a popular present for Christmas. And no doubt many kids are jumping with excitement about their new bicycles right now. However, very soon they will get wise to the nature of the world. Yep, within a few months they’ll know what they want next Christmas. So let’s help deliver it to them this […]
I’ve just returned from my first visit to Amsterdam. Of course, the first thing on my to-do list was to indulge in some… pannekoeken. No really, I love pancakes. Any type of cake really. Especially when buried in a certain chocolate-hazelnut spread. But after I checked that off my list (three times) I went to see […]
Boston is a walking city… or so they say. And sometimes I try to walk places. But when you’re on foot, Boston is more of a waiting city… We don’t want car traffic to get backed up do we?
